Our minds are constantly generating thoughts that distract us from reality from "summary" of Waking Up by Sam Harris

Our experience of the world is constantly being mediated by the mind. We rarely pay attention to the flood of thoughts that run through our heads, but these mental processes are what shape our perception of reality. We are often lost in thought, preoccupied with the past or future, and fail to fully engage with the present moment. It is as though we are living in a dream, only vaguely aware of the world around us. This constant mental chatter can be likened to a veil that separates us from reality. It obscures our direct experience of the world, coloring it with our beliefs, desires, and fears. We mistake our thoughts for reality itself, losing touch with the raw, unfiltered nature of our sensory perceptions. As a result, we become disconnected from the richness and immediacy of the present moment. Our minds are like unruly children, constantly seeking distraction from the present moment. We are drawn to the past and future, to fantasies and worries, rather than simply being present with what is. This mental turbulence can be exhausting, leaving us feeling fragmented and disoriented. We may feel as though we are constantly chasing after something, never fully satisfied with the here and now. In order to awaken from this state of mental fog, we must learn to recognize our thoughts for what they are: fleeting mental events that do not define reality. By cultivating mindfulness, we can begin to observe the workings of our minds without getting caught up in them. We can learn to anchor ourselves in the present moment, allowing reality to reveal itself in all its vividness and immediacy. This process of waking up requires effort and practice. It involves training the mind to let go of its habitual patterns of thinking and to simply be with what is. Through meditation and self-inquiry, we can begin to untangle the web of thoughts that distract us from reality. In doing so, we can glimpse the true nature of our minds and the world around us, free from the distortions of our mental chatter.
