Leadership styles can be divided into two distinct categories: Starfish and Spider. Starfish leadership is characterized by decentralization, allowing each part to act independently and contribute to the larger goal while Spider leadership is centralized, relying on a single leader to direct and control all activity.- Leadership means taking a supportive and guiding role, to help foster the success of a team or group. This is often achieved by creating a clear vision for the group and inspiring them to work towards it with their own strengths and ideas.
- Leading isn't about forcing someone else's beliefs onto others - instead it's about empowering individuals within an organization to make decisions on their own yet still have the confidence and solidarity as part of the team.
- Leading doesn't mean simply delivering orders but rather setting an example for how to act and influencing people through positive attitude, constructive reinforcement and being receptive and open to ideas and feedback.
- Creating trust between a leader and their employees is key; this way they will not only want to do a better job for their boss but also feel deeply connected to the company’s vision and values.
- Encouraging initiative and innovation from team members rather than telling them what to do can give them ownership of any projects and create a more successful outcome.
- Having reliable support and communication strategies will increase accountability and build commitment from those leading the team, ultimately helping guide everybody in the same direction towards common goals and objectives.
