You are not your thoughts; you are the awareness behind them from "summary" of The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Thoughts come and go in our minds like clouds passing through the sky. They can be positive or negative, happy or sad, but they are not who we are. We tend to identify with our thoughts, believing that they define us and shape our reality. However, this is not the truth. Behind every thought, there is a silent observer - the awareness that is beyond the realm of thinking. This awareness is our true nature, our essence that exists beyond the realm of the mind. It is the space in which thoughts arise and dissolve, but it is not affected by them. When we become conscious of this awareness, we start to disidentify from our thoughts. We realize that we are not the thinker but the one who is aware of the thoughts. This realization brings a sense of freedom and liberation from the incessant chatter of the mind. By observing our thoughts without judgment or attachment, we can create distance between ourselves and the mental noise. We can choose not to engage with negative or harmful thoughts, recognizing that they do not define us. Instead, we can focus on the present moment and the peace that comes from being in tune with our true essence. Living from this place of awareness allows us to experience life more fully and authentically. We can respond to situations with clarity and wisdom, rather than reacting impulsively based on our thoughts. We can cultivate a sense of inner peace and serenity that is not dependent on external circumstances.- By realizing that we are not our thoughts but the awareness behind them, we can transcend the limitations of the mind and connect with our true self. We can experience a deeper sense of presence and aliveness that goes beyond the realm of thought. This is the power of being in the now.
