Growth through mutual respect from "summary" of The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan

We grew because we respected each other. It wasn't just about love. It was about acknowledging each other's individuality, understanding each other's boundaries, and appreciating each other's differences. Respect became the foundation upon which our relationship was built. It was the glue that held us together through the ups and downs, the disagreements and the misunderstandings. When we respected each other, we listened. We listened not just with our ears, but with our hearts. We listened to each other's hopes and fears, dreams and insecurities. And in that listening, we found common ground, understanding, and empathy. Respect allowed us to grow as individuals within the confines of our relationship. We supported each other's personal growth, encouraged each other's passions, and celebrated each other's successes. We gave each other the space and freedom to be ourselves, while also being there for each other every step of the way. Through mutual respect, we learned to communicate openly and honestly. We shared our thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or rejection. We built a sense of trust that allowed us to be vulnerable with each other, to be our true selves without reservations. In the end, it was our mutual respect that sustained us. It was the thread that wove our hearts together, creating a bond that was unbreakable. And as we continued to grow, both individually and as a couple, we knew that our respect for each other would always be the guiding light that led us forward.
