Let go of distractions and focus on your breath from "summary" of The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe
Imagine your mind is like a clear blue sky, with thoughts drifting by like clouds. Sometimes these clouds can become stormy, darkening the sky and obscuring the blue. When this happens, it can be easy to get caught up in the storm, losing sight of the clear sky altogether. But no matter how stormy it gets, the blue sky is always there, waiting patiently behind the clouds.
In meditation, we practice letting go of these stormy thoughts and returning our focus to the present moment. One way to do this is by focusing on our breath. The breath is always with us, a constant anchor in the ever-changing sea of thoughts and emotions. By bringing our attention to the breath, we can cultivate a sense of calm and clarity, allowing the storm clouds to dissipate and revealing the clear blue sky of our mind once again.
When we notice ourselves becoming distracted by thoughts or emotions, we can gently guide our attention back to the breath. This is not about forcing the mind to be still or suppressing thoughts; it is simply about acknowledging distractions and choosing to return our focus to the breath. With practice, this becomes easier, and we can begin to cultivate a sense of presence and awareness in our everyday lives.
By letting go of distractions and focusing on our breath, we can learn to be more present, more mindful, and more connected to ourselves and the world around us. This practice is not about achieving a particular state of mind or reaching a specific goal; it is simply about being with what is, in this moment, without judgment or expectation. So the next time you find yourself caught in a storm of thoughts, remember to come back to your breath, and allow the clear blue sky of your mind to shine through once again.
