Let go of the past and future to fully embrace the present from "summary" of Mindfulness in Plain English by Henepola Gunaratana

To fully embrace the present moment, we must release our attachments to the past and the future. Our minds have a tendency to dwell on what has already happened or to worry about what may come, pulling us away from the reality of the present. This habit of clinging to the past and grasping for the future prevents us from experiencing life as it unfolds before us. When we hold onto the past, we carry the weight of our memories and regrets, clouding our perception of the present moment. By constantly rehashing what has already occurred, we miss out on the opportunities and joys that the present has to offer. Similarly, when we fixate on the future, we become consumed by our fears and expectations, creating unnecessary stress and anxiety that distract us from the beauty of the present moment. To break free from this cycle of attachment, we must learn to let go of our preoccupations with the past and the future. By releasing our grip on what has already transpired and what is yet to come, we can open ourselves up to the richness of the present moment. This requires a willingness to surrender our need for control and certainty, allowing life to unfold naturally without our interference. Mindfulness practice offers us a way to cultivate this ability to be fully present in the here and now. By staying attuned to our breath, our sensations, and our thoughts in each moment, we can train our minds to let go of distractions and return to the present moment. Through this practice, we develop a sense of clarity and awareness that allows us to experience life fully, without the burden of the past or the uncertainty of the future weighing us down. In letting go of our attachments to the past and the future, we free ourselves to fully engage with the present moment. We become more open to the beauty and wonder of life as it unfolds before us, experiencing each moment with a sense of freshness and aliveness. By releasing our grip on what has been and what may come, we allow ourselves to be fully present in the only moment that truly exists – the present.
