Cognitive distortions can be identified and corrected through cognitive restructuring from "summary" of Learned Optimism by Martin E. P. Seligman

Cognitive distortions are patterns of negative thinking that can lead to feelings of pessimism and hopelessness. These distortions often result from our interpretation of events, rather than the events themselves. By learning to identify these distortions, we can start to challenge and correct them. Cognitive restructuring is the process of replacing negative thoughts with more positive and realistic ones. This involves examining the evidence for and against a particular belief, considering alternative explanations, and evaluating the consequences of maintaining a negative mindset. Through this process, we can begin to change our thought patterns and develop a more optimistic outlook on life. One common cognitive distortion is known as "catastrophizing," where we blow things out of proportion and assume the worst possible outcome. By challenging these catastrophic thoughts and considering more realistic possibilities, we can start to reduce our anxiety and fear. Another distortion is "personalization," where we blame ourselves for negative events that are beyond our control. By shifting our perspective and recognizing that not everything is our fault, we can begin to take a more balanced and compassionate view of ourselves.
  1. We can learn to recognize when our thinking is distorted and replace these negative thoughts with more accurate and positive ones. This process takes time and practice, but it can ultimately lead to a more optimistic and resilient mindset. By challenging our cognitive distortions, we can begin to see the world in a more balanced and hopeful light.
