Geriatric nurses should advocate for policies that support the needs of older adults from "summary" of Geriatric Nursing by Priscilla Ebersole, RN, PhD, FAAN,Theris A. Touhy, ND, APRN, BC
As geriatric nurses, it is imperative that we actively advocate for policies that prioritize the needs of our elderly patients. Our role extends beyond the bedside; we must also serve as advocates for this vulnerable population at the policy level. By advocating for policies that support the unique needs of older adults, we can help ensure that they receive the care and resources necessary to maintain their health and well-being. One of the key reasons why geriatric nurses should advocate for such policies is because older adults often face specific challenges that require targeted interventions. These may include issues related to chronic conditions, mobility limitations, cognitive impairments, and social isolation. By advocating for policies that address these challenges, we can help ensure that older adults have access to the specialized care and support they need to thrive. Furthermore, advocating for policies that support the needs of older adults can help address systemic issues that impact this population. For example, advocating for funding for geriatric research can lead to advancements in treatments and interventions for age-related conditions. Similarly, advocating for policies that promote age-friendly communities can help create environments that support the independence and well-being of older adults. In addition, advocating for policies that prioritize the needs of older adults can help promote equity and social justice within our healthcare system. Older adults, particularly those from marginalized communities, may face disparities in access to care and resources. By advocating for policies that address these disparities, we can help ensure that all older adults receive the care and support they need to age with dignity and respect.- As geriatric nurses, it is our responsibility to use our voice and expertise to advocate for policies that support the needs of older adults. By doing so, we can help create a healthcare system that is truly responsive to the needs of this growing population.
