The FBI believes Reacher is somehow involved in the crime from "summary" of Die Trying by Lee Child
The FBI was sure. Reacher was their man. Somehow, someway, he was involved in the crime. They had their reasons. They had their theories. But most of all, they had their gut feeling. It was hard to explain, but they just knew. It didn't make sense on the surface, but they couldn't shake the feeling. They had been watching him closely. Following his every move. Reading between the lines. Looking for any sign of guilt or involvement. They knew he was a drifter. A loner. A man with a mysterious past. But that didn't necessarily make him a criminal. Yet, there was something about him that raised red flags.
The evidence didn't point directly to him. It was all circumstantial. But sometimes, that was all they needed. They had seen cases like this before. Cases where the pieces didn't quite fit together, but they knew the truth deep down. They knew they had to keep digging. Keep pushing. Keep looking for that one piece of evidence that would tie it all together.
Reacher was aware of their suspicions. He could feel their eyes on him. Their doubts. Their certainty that he was hiding something. But he was innocent. He had nothing to hide. He knew he had to prove it. He had to find the real culprit. The one who had framed him. The one who had made the FBI believe he was somehow involved in the crime.
