It's important to prioritize your own happiness from "summary" of Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

In a world where we are constantly bombarded with the idea that we should put others before ourselves, it can be easy to forget the importance of prioritizing our own happiness. We are often taught that selflessness is a virtue, and while there is certainly merit in caring for others, we must not neglect our own well-being in the process. When we neglect our own happiness in favor of others, we run the risk of becoming resentful and burnt out. It is important to remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup - we must take care of ourselves first in order to be able to effectively care for others. This is not selfishness, but rather a necessary act of self-preservation. In "Better Than the Movies," the protagonist learns this lesson the hard way. She spends so much time trying to please others and live up to their expectations that she loses sight of what truly makes her happy. It is only when she begins to prioritize her own happiness that she is able to find fulfillment and live authentically. Prioritizing our own happiness does not mean disregarding the needs and feelings of others. It simply means recognizing that our own well-being is just as important as anyone else's. By taking care of ourselves, we are better able to show up for those we care about and make a positive impact in the world. In a society that often glorifies self-sacrifice and martyrdom, it can be difficult to advocate for our own happiness. However, it is essential that we do so in order to live a full and meaningful life. We owe it to ourselves to put our own well-being first and make choices that align with our own values and desires.
