Inauthenticity is a state of living in denial from "summary" of Being and Time by Martin Heidegger
Inauthenticity is a pervasive tendency of human existence that manifests itself as a state of living in denial. This state involves a fundamental disconnection from one's own self, leading to a distorted perception of reality. Inauthenticity arises from the fear of confronting the true nature of one's being, and the consequent avoidance of facing the existential questions that lie at the core of human existence.
Living in denial, inauthentic individuals adopt a superficial and shallow way of engaging with the world. They seek refuge in routines, distractions, and conformity, avoiding any deeper engagement with their own thoughts, emotions, and desires. In doing so, they sacrifice their authentic selves in favor of a false sense of security and comfort.
Heidegger argues that inauthenticity is a form of self-deception, in which individuals deceive themselves into believing that they are living authentically when, in fact, they are merely going through the motions of existence. This self-deception is a coping mechanism that allows individuals to avoid the anxiety and uncertainty that accompany a genuine confrontation with the existential questions that define human existence.
By living in denial, individuals fail to take responsibility for their own lives and choices. They relinquish their agency and autonomy, allowing external norms and expectations to dictate their actions and beliefs. In this way, inauthentic individuals become alienated from themselves, living according to the expectations of others rather than their own authentic desires and values.
Heidegger argues that in order to overcome inauthenticity, individuals must confront the fundamental questions of existence head-on. They must embrace their own mortality, finitude, and freedom, and take responsibility for their own choices and actions. Only by facing the existential questions that define human existence can individuals live authentically and reclaim their true selves.
