Practice nonattachment to expectations and outcomes from "summary" of After the Ecstasy, the Laundry by Jack Kornfield

In the spiritual life, as in the ordinary world, we often find ourselves attached to expectations and outcomes. We have a tendency to cling to certain ideas of how things should be, how people should behave, how situations should unfold. This attachment can lead to suffering and disappointment when things do not go as planned. Nonattachment to expectations and outcomes does not mean that we should not have goals or intentions. It simply means that we should not be rigidly attached to specific outcomes. We can have a vision of how we want things to unfold, but we must also be open to the possibility that things may not go as we expect. This flexibility allows us to remain present and engaged in the moment, rather than becoming fixated on the future. When we are attached to expectations and outcomes, we are not fully present in the here and now. We are always looking ahead, anticipating what will come next. This can prevent us from fully experiencing and appreciating the beauty and richness of the present moment. Nonattachment allows us to let go of our preconceived ideas and simply be with what is. Nonattachment to expectations and outcomes also requires a certain level of trust in the universe or a higher power. We must believe that things will unfold as they are meant to, even if they do not match our own desires or expectations. This trust allows us to surrender control and find peace in the midst of uncertainty. Practicing nonattachment to expectations and outcomes is a lifelong journey. It requires mindfulness, self-awareness, and a willingness to let go of our need to control. By cultivating a mindset of openness and acceptance, we can find freedom from the suffering that comes from attachment. We can learn to embrace the uncertainty of life with grace and humility, knowing that we are not in control of the outcomes, but we can choose how we respond to them.
